Mascot Costume Care: How to Protect a £10,000+ Asset

A professional mascot costume can cost anywhere from £5,000 to £25,000 or more. They’re custom-built, often irreplaceable at short notice, and absolutely critical to your brand presence. Yet most organisations treat them like fancy dress outfits.
The Hidden Cost of Neglect
I’ve walked into storage rooms where £15,000 costumes were stuffed into bin bags, left in damp cupboards, or hung on wire hangers that deform the structure. The result? Costumes that should last 5+ years are replaced after 18 months — a completely avoidable waste of budget.
Beyond replacement cost, a visibly worn or damaged costume sends a terrible message about your brand. Stained fabric, matted fur, scuffed shoes, and drooping features all scream “we don’t care about details.” Your audience notices, even if they can’t articulate it.
The Five Pillars of Costume Care
1. Storage — Every costume needs a dedicated storage area: cool, dry, well-ventilated, and away from direct sunlight. Heads should be stored on proper head stands, bodies on padded hangers or mannequin forms. Hands and feet in breathable bags.
2. Cleaning Protocols — Document cleaning procedures specific to each costume’s materials. Internal linings should be cleaned after every use. External cleaning depends on materials but should happen weekly during heavy use periods. Never machine wash unless manufacturer-approved.
3. Pre and Post-Performance Checks — Create a simple checklist that performers complete before and after every outing. This catches small issues (loose seams, missing accessories, mechanism failures) before they become expensive repairs.
4. Repair Schedule — Don’t wait for visible damage. Schedule quarterly professional inspections and maintenance. Small repairs now prevent costly replacements later.
5. Usage Tracking — Log every costume use: date, performer, duration, conditions, and any issues. This data helps predict replacement timing, identify performers who cause more wear, and justify budget requests.
Building an SOP
All of the above should be documented in a formal Standard Operating Procedure that every team member follows. Consistency in care extends costume life, protects your investment, and ensures your brand always looks its best in front of the public.
